Styles

The Style applied to a screen, or a whole survey, lesson or test, determines visual appearance. It has no affect on anything else. Styles, however, can make a significant difference to productivity. You can find out more about productivity here.

Amending or creating a Style

Styles are simply screen files stored in a special folder (C:\Program Files\Question Tools\Styles\). If you open the one used as the present Master Style then you can make changes to it and you will see all of the screens that are set to Master Style change the way they look as soon as you save it. If you want to create a style then it is best to duplicate an existing Style file and use it as a starting point. Note that the objects in a Style file are all set to be Custom.

Style differences

Button Styles are slightly different, because instead of having the same list as appears in the Master Style menu, the Style menu for a Select or True/False button is a list of the folders with different graphic buttons.

Text Areas and Feedbacks are slightly different because you can have more than one style for these. You can select these substyles using the Type setting.

What does Style affect?

• Background colour and background image
• Shape colour
• Feedback colour and edge style
• Select and True/False button graphics
• Text Areas in terms font, font size, font colour and font style.
• Menus in terms of background colour, font, font size, font colour and font style.
• Fields in terms of background colour, font, font size, font colour, font style and border.
• Drags in terms of background colour, font, font size, font colour, font style and border.
• Pictures that use Clip Art.

Problems

Why does it have no effect on my old screens?

The Master Style setting can only have an effect if a screen is set to use the Master Style. You can set a screen's style to be the same as the Master Style, or for it to use another style in the list.

Some Buttons, Text Areas and Drags seem to ignore the Style setting

All of the elements in a screen that are affected by the Style setting can be set to custom. If this is the case, the object (Text Area, Field, etc) will simply ignore the Style setting. To change this select the object and set its Style to be Same as Screen.

Results in Web Pages

When a lesson, survey or test is created as a set of web pages or a content package for NetSeries, the fonts and colours used to display the results to the user at the end of the test are determined by a style sheet. Normally, a default style sheet called style.css is used. The file is in the Settings folder in the same folder as Editor and SimpleSet. If you alter this file it will change the way all results are displayed at the end of tests, lessons and surveys taken in a web browser.

Alternatively, you can create a style.css file and place it in the same folder as a Screen List. Editor and SimpleSet only use the default style.css file (in the Settings folder) if a style.css file cannot be found in the same folder as the Screen List.
