Installation

To install either Question Tools Editor Suite or NetSeries simply download the installer from the Question Tools site here and then double-click to open and start the installer. When you install Editor Suite it will install Question Tools SimpleSet, Editor and Exam on your computer.

Updating 3.0. If you already have version Editor Suite version 3.0 or above (or NetSeries 3.0 or above) then you should use the updater rather than the installer. Updaters can be downloaded from here.

Updating 2.0 and 1.0. If you already have version 2.0 or earlier of Question Tools Editor, Exam or SimpleSet on your computer, and you are upgrading to a later version, then the new version will overwrite the old. If you have added any templates or styles then these should remain untouched. However, if you have altered any installed templates or styles then these will probably be overwritten by the installer's version. It is best to make a copy of these so you can replace them later.

Administrator privileges

Question Tools has its own file types — i.e. Screen files, Screen Lists, site files, Banks and results files. This is the feature that allows you to double-click on a file to open it. However, these file types have to be registered with the copy of Windows on your computer. To do this you should be logged on as an administrator. (Although, you may have administrator privileges and not know it.)

If you install without administrator privileges then the Question Tools Installer should work anyway. The consequences are not serious, and it is still possible to effectively use Question Tools. This is what will happen if you install without the correct privileges:

  • You will be warned that the file associations have not been registered when you first start any of the Question Tools applications.
  • The Question Tools files you create will not have the correct owl icon when shown on your computer.
  • You will not be able to open Question Tools files by double-clicking on them.
  • When you try to open example Question Tools files from the Start menu your computer will not automatically load them into Question Tools, and will probably not even show Question Tools as one of the options for opening the files. Instead you have to open the Question Tools application you want to use, then select Open from the File menu and find your way to this folder: C:\Program Files\Question Tools\Examples\
