Feedbacks

Feedbacks are windows / areas that can contain Text, Pictures, Shapes, Video and can include attached sounds or speech. The maximum number of feedbacks you can have in one screen is 20. These feedback windows are displayed when:

  • the user presses the Mark button (if it is available),
  • the user has finished and is reviewing marked answers (if this facility is enabled).

Which Feedbacks are displayed depends upon the Feedback Rules you have created (see below).

To add a picture or video to a feedback simply select the feedback and then press the Picture or Video button on the toolbar to create a new picture or video. Alternatively, you can copy a video or picture you already have on screen, select the feedback area, and then select Paste from the Edit menu.

Hiding and Showing

When editing (in Layout) you can hide or show a Feedback simply by clicking on the Yes or No text in the Shown column of the Feedback tab.

Style and Visual Appearance

The colour and border are automatically set according to the Style setting, although you can directly adjust these to create a custom setting. There is also a Type setting that allows you to choose between different feedback appearances available in the style. Click here to find out more about creating your own style.

Sounds

You can attach sounds to Feedbacks. The attached sounds will play every time the feedback is shown. Attached sounds can be in WAV, MP2, MP3 or AIF formats.

Other Controls

Lock. If lock is selected then you will not be able to move the Feedback using the mouse or the arrow keys on the keyboard — it prevents accidental movements. However, you can still move and resize a Feedback by entering values in the Left, Top, Width and Height fields.

Name. You can give a Feedback more or less any name you wish. Make sure that no two Feedbacks in a screen have the same name, as these names are used in the Feedback rules (explained below).

Feedback Rules

The Rules tab in a screen allows you to add rules that determine which Feedbacks are shown. When Feedbacks need to be displayed Question Tools works through each of these rules in turn. You can set a Feedback to appear (or even not appear) according to:

  • the overall score in the screen,
  • the score for a particular element, such as a Button, Field, Menu or Drag,
  • the selection or entry a user has made in a particular element.

  1. Rule 1 (above) essentially says "Show the Feedback named 'Feedback 1' if the overall score is the maximum that can be achieved."
  2. Rule 2 (above) says "Show the Feedback named 'Feedback 2' if the user has selected Button 1."
  3. Rule 3 (above) says "Show the Feedback named 'Feedback 3' if the user achieves an overall score between 1.5 and 3."

Show menu. Instead of Show, you can also select Do not show or Always Show. If you select Always Show then the Feedback will be always be displayed. If you select Last resort then the Feedback will be shown only if no other Feedbacks have been displayed.

Marks and Selections. If you select score = max or score = min then no other entries are needed. If you select selection = then you will need to tick some of the options that appear (e.g. Not selected, Selected or Menu item names, Drag target names or Field answers). If you select score = then you need to enter a score in the next field. You can also enter a range of marks if you wish, such as 1.5-3 (see above), which means any mark between 1.5 and 3 (inclusive). Ranges such as -1.5--3 will also work (i.e. any mark between -3 and -1.5 inclusive).
